The Profile

Aryan was a student who enjoyed figuring out how things worked. Mathematics, Computer Science and problem-solving came naturally to him, but his curiosity often took unexpected forms. He explored everything from building a water-tank detector and developing a school timetable algorithm to studying how people choose perfumes. Football was another constant, particularly his role as a goalkeeper, which gave him a very different understanding of teamwork and responsibility. At school, he progressed into senior leadership roles, eventually becoming Head Boy. Academically strong and naturally inquisitive, Aryan was most engaged when he could take an idea and turn it into something tangible.

The Challenge

Aryan did not need more activities; he needed to understand which of his many interests were worth pursuing further. His academic strengths could have easily led to a conventional Computer Science or Mathematics profile, but that would have missed the more unusual way he approached problems. The challenge was to identify the threads that genuinely belonged to him and give them enough time to develop. His perfume experiments, coding projects, football and leadership initially appeared unrelated. The UAH mentor needed to help him find the underlying qualities connecting them, while also strengthening his academic preparation and gradually helping him make a more informed decision about his intended field of study.

The Intervention

The UAH mentor encouraged Aryan to begin with problems that genuinely interested him rather than selecting projects simply because they looked impressive. This led to several small experiments. He worked on a timetable algorithm, first understanding how his school actually created timetables before attempting to code a solution. He developed and tested a water-tank detector, learning how a prototype moves from an idea to something that can be used in the real world.

His interest in perfumes became particularly interesting. Rather than treating it as simply a hobby, the mentor encouraged him to investigate the science and psychology behind fragrance preferences. Aryan wrote blogs, explored how recommendation systems could work and eventually began developing a fragrance recommendation algorithm using different user and preference parameters. This became an important part of his profile because it combined his curiosity about people with his interest in technology and problem-solving.

The mentor also encouraged him to explore his leadership through experiences that were already meaningful to him. His perspective as a goalkeeper became a way of understanding leadership differently—not always being the person in the centre of action, but creating confidence for the people around you.

Alongside this exploration, the UAH mentor kept him focused on academic rigour, including advanced mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and Chemistry, SAT/ACT preparation and university research. As applications approached, the focus shifted to building a detailed profile, identifying the strongest stories, selecting universities and developing essays that revealed how Aryan thought rather than simply listing what he had achieved.

The Result

Aryan’s application ultimately brought together three distinctive sides of him: a strong quantitative mind, a fascination with solving everyday problems and a thoughtful approach to leadership. His work on technology and recommendation systems gave substance to his academic interests, while his experiences outside the classroom showed the person behind them.

Aryan is pursuing Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics at the University of California, San Diego.
